Introduction

Graphic teens on laptopAssessment of student knowledge comes in many formats and serves many purposes in classrooms. Assessments may be given prior to instruction to help a teacher learn what students already know and where the level of instruction should begin. Other assessments may be given during instruction; these assessments aid a teacher in discerning what has been learned and what students still need to learn. Still other assessments are given following instruction and are designed to capture what students have learned.
