Assessment and Instruction Interconnectedness

image-teens calcAssessment is a tool to guide and create the learning that takes place in a classroom. The relationship between assessment and instruction is intertwined: The results of assessment determine the instruction that is provided, while similarly the instruction affects the types of assessments used and the results of the assessment.

Again, in turn, the assessment results determine the next instruction. This cycle continues throughout the learning and the teacher maintains individual running records for each student. Instruction takes on a different form as teachers target activities designed to match students’ current levels of knowledge and skills. Ongoing assessment strategies ascertain each student’s skill level and the teacher tailors instruction based on each individual student’s skills and knowledge.
